Surviving Luxury

How much money do you think you need to live on for exactly one year?

That depends entirely on where you live and your standards. Do you want to live in a mansion in beverly hills, or a hut in Kenya?

If you want to truly found out about this, the UN and World Bank have done studies on exactly that question for decades. It was my major after all. There is a poverty line, and then there is a 'living poverty' line. The first is an average of what people make, and the second is what it costs to live. Globaly speaking, you should be able to live on a dollar a day, but millions of people make less than that.

this is put out by the UN's Development Project. There is such a thing as a Human Development Index, it rates literacy, income, access to basic human needs (clean water/food). Just as a warning, the file is rather large (134pages), so it may take time to load. In any event, its got some neat statistics for those who are curious about such things. Just about every African nation has, on average, 40% of its population living below the Global Poverty line ($1 per day).

  4. very interesting - anyone want to move to tawain with me and live in a hut. I remember my buddy from OZ saying it was only $4 a day. Hmm. I've come to the realization (again) that I don't have to put my career first. Yeah, I'd much rather live and be free than arm wrestle with corporate america.
